Biography

Diego Vega is a Colombian composer. His music has been performed in some of the most important concert halls in the United States, Europe and Latin America by ensembles such as the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Eighth Blackbird, Ensemble X, Alea III, the Colombian National Symphony, the Bogotá Philharmonic, the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, the Quintet of the Americas, the Soli Chamber Ensemble, and internationally acclaimed soloists like pianist Stephen Prutsman, clarinetist José Franch-Ballester, cellist Andrés Díaz, and flutist Bradley Garner, among others. Diego has written commissioned works for the Colombian National Symphony, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, the Cornell Symphony and the Cornell Chorus, and the Salvi Foundation and the Cartagena International Music Festival. Vega has also been awarded the National Prize of Music in Composition in 2004, the Ensemble X composition competition in 2004, Alea III 20th anniversary prize in 2002, one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the Year in 1996 in Colombia, and prestigious scholarships such as Fulbright and the Sage Fellowship at Cornell University. Vega holds degrees from Cornell University (DMA), University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (MM), and Universidad Javeriana (BM) in Bogota, Colombia, and has served as faculty at Syracuse University and Universidad Javeriana. Currently he is professor of music composition and theory at UNLV. Among his composition teachers are Guillermo Gaviria, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Joel Hoffman, Roberto Sierra, and Steven Stucky. Diego Vega has written music for soloists, a variety of chamber groups, symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, choral ensembles, computer and electronic music. Biography

Born in Mexico City, Antonio Juan-Marcos began his musical training studying classical guitar; he later studied composition, piano and guitar at the Boston Conservatory. In 2003 he continued his bachelor’s and master’s degree at the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris’’, where he graduated with honors with the piece “Arder Aprender.” From 2012 to 2013 he participated in the Electroacoustic Composition Course at the “Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique / Musique’’ (IRCAM). He has studied with some of the most renowned composers such as Kaija Saariaho, O. Golijov, Stefano Gervasoni, Narcís Bonet, Allain Gaussin, Philippe Leroux and Franck Bedrossian. Antonio is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Musical Composition at UC Berkeley, where he also works as a pro- fessor of harmony. Antonio Juan-Marcos has recently been awarded with the Gold Medal-Best of Show honors at the Global Music Awards for his piece “Nocturno Eléctrico’’; he also received the prestigious “Eisner Prize for the Highest Achievement in the Creative Arts” on behalf of the University of California Berkeley for the ensemble of his recent compositions, as well as the first place in the composition competition “Nicola De Lorenzo Prize in Music Composition’’ granted by the Department of Music at UC Berkeley. Important recent world premieres include: “Amanece’’- for countertenor and orchestra (2014) written as a celebration of the birth centenary of the literature Nobel Prize winner, Octavio Paz, as well as “Nocturno Eléctrico’’- for electric guitar and orchestra (2015). It is worth noting that Alejandro Marcovich (guitarist, founder of the famous Latin American rock group “Caifanes”) was the soloist for “Nocturno Eléctrico’’. Both pieces were commissioned by The Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra. “Amanece’’ will receive its American premiere in December 2016 by the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, in a program next to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Mr. Juan-Marcos is currently composing a song cycle for the internationally known ensemble “Les Folies Françoises’’ in which he musicalizes four sonnets attributed to Antonio Vivaldi. These sonnets were written in correlation with the violin concerti “The Four Seasons’’. Antonio Juan-Marcos is the third composer to receive a commission from the “Les Folies Françoises’’. The first two composers to appear in this select catalog where Kaija Saariaho (2009) and Thierry Pécou (2013). Antonio has also received a commission from the “Festival Internacional Cervantino” to compose a monodrama for voice, video and ensemble inspired by the short story “Macario” by Juan Rulfo, one of Latin America’s most prominent writers and a fundamental source of the literary movement known as “Magical Realism”. This piece will be premiered by the “Ensemble 2e2m” in 2017 and will celebrate Mr. Rulfo birth centenary. Additional commissions include new orchestral music for some of the most important Mexican national orchestras. His pieces have been presented in the United States, France, Belgium, Spain and his native Mexico, under the direction of José Areán, David Milnes, Zsolt Nagy, Kanako Abe, Jean-Philippe Wurtz, Laurent Cuniot and Pierre Roullier. Antonio’s works are included in the repertoires of prestigious ensembles and orchestras such as the “Orchestre National de Lorraine’’, Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, “Ensemble InterContemporain”, “Eco Ensemble,” “L’Instant Donné”, “L’Ensemble Multilatérale’’, amongst others. His piece for cello and electronics ‘’El Afilador’’ was recorded by the cellist Marie Ythier for Evidence Classics records (distributed by Harmonia Mundi). Antonio has been selected to participate in important festivals and academies such as: Acanthes (France)- where he studied with Salvatore Sciarrino, Musicalta (France), and the “Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Córdoba” (Spain) – where he studied guitar and composition with Leo Brouwer.

Biography

Born in Mexico City, Antonio Juan-Marcos began his musical training studying classical guitar; he later studied composition, piano and guitar at the Boston Conservatory. In 2003 he continued his bachelor’s and master’s degree at the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris’’, where he graduated with honors with the piece “Arder Aprender.” From 2012 to 2013 he participated in the Electroacoustic Composition Course at the “Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique / Musique’’ (IRCAM). He has studied with some of the most renowned composers such as Kaija Saariaho, O. Golijov, Stefano Gervasoni, Narcís Bonet, Allain Gaussin, Philippe Leroux and Franck Bedrossian. Antonio is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Musical Composition at UC Berkeley, where he also works as a pro- fessor of harmony. Antonio Juan-Marcos has recently been awarded with the Gold Medal-Best of Show honors at the Global Music Awards for his piece “Nocturno Eléctrico’’; he also received the prestigious “Eisner Prize for the Highest Achievement in the Creative Arts” on behalf of the University of California Berkeley for the ensemble of his recent compositions, as well as the first place in the composition competition “Nicola De Lorenzo Prize in Music Composition’’ granted by the Department of Music at UC Berkeley. Important recent world premieres include: “Amanece’’- for countertenor and orchestra (2014) written as a celebration of the birth centenary of the literature Nobel Prize winner, Octavio Paz, as well as “Nocturno Eléctrico’’- for electric guitar and orchestra (2015). It is worth noting that Alejandro Marcovich (guitarist, founder of the famous Latin American rock group “Caifanes”) was the soloist for “Nocturno Eléctrico’’. Both pieces were commissioned by The Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra. “Amanece’’ will receive its American premiere in December 2016 by the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, in a program next to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Mr. Juan-Marcos is currently composing a song cycle for the internationally known ensemble “Les Folies Françoises’’ in which he musicalizes four sonnets attributed to Antonio Vivaldi. These sonnets were written in correlation with the violin concerti “The Four Seasons’’. Antonio Juan-Marcos is the third composer to receive a commission from the “Les Folies Françoises’’. The first two composers to appear in this select catalog where Kaija Saariaho (2009) and Thierry Pécou (2013). Antonio has also received a commission from the “Festival Internacional Cervantino” to compose a monodrama for voice, video and ensemble inspired by the short story “Macario” by Juan Rulfo, one of Latin America’s most prominent writers and a fundamental source of the literary movement known as “Magical Realism”. Biography

Born in Lima, he began musical studies at the age of six, continuing to study the violin with Luis Fiestas and Veronique Daverio. In 1989, he and his family fled Peru for Brazil during the rise of the Maoist Shining Path. In Brazil, he continued musical studies at Faculdade Santa Marcelina with Alberto Jaffe (a student of Max Rostal) and Ayrton Pinto (a former member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). In 1998 he moved to the U.S.A. There he obtained a master's degree at Florida International University as a student of Fredrick Kaufman and, in 2004 he graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University as a student of John Harbison and Lukas Foss. His music has been performed world-wide by ensembles such as the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Peruvian National Symphony, New England Philharmonic, Aspen Sinfonia, Orquesta Uninorte (Paraguay), Kiev Camerata, Henderson Symphony, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Boston Musica Viva, Da Capo Chamber Players, Seattle Chamber Players, Pierrot Lunaire Ensemble Wien, Talea Ensemble, JACK Quartet, among others. His awards include a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Jacob Druckman Award from the Aspen Music Festival, Aaron Copland Award, Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, "Bolsa de Artes" by the Associacao Vitae (a fellowship of six months to a year, under which he composed his String Quartet no. 2). His compositions have been recognized at competitions such as ALEA III International Composition Competition (finalist), New England Philharmonic Call for Scores (winner). He has been in residence at The MacDowell Colony, Atlantic Center for the Arts, and as guest composer in several festivals in the U.S. and abroad. He is a member of altaVoz a Latin American composers collective. From 2004 to 2010 he served as assistant professor of theory/composition at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he co-founded and co-directed N.E.O.N., Nevada Encounters of New Music and directed NEXTET, UNLV's new music ensemble. Since 2010, he teaches composition at Ithaca College. Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann's music began to draw inspiration from Peruvian themes once he relocated to Boston, as demonstrated by his works Pensar Geométrico al Trasluz, based on César Vallejo, and "Siray" (meaning "to weave" in Quechua). Other notable works include his three-movement solo violin piece La Ricerca della Spiritualità Trascendente, which takes inspiration from older models such as the flashy unaccompanied fiddle items of Bach and Bartok and his 2012 orchestral triptych "Anemoi", which was premiered at the Musical Premieres of the Season festival in Kiev by the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine.

Winner of the 2009 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Colombian composer Victor Agudelo began studying classical piano and music theory at the Colombo-Venezolano School of Music. Years later Agudelo continued his popular piano studies at the Colegio de Música de Medellín. In 1998 he attended to the Universidad EAFIT to continue his music studies with a concentration in composition. Víctor studied composition and music theory with professors Andrés Posada, Moises Bertrán, Mario Gómez Vignes and Sergio Mesa. He also took piano with Lise Frank and choral conducting with Cecilia Espinosa. In 2000 and 2001 Agudelo won the EAFIT's music department composition contests with the works: "Credo" and "Sangre de Hincha" (Blood of the Fan) respectively. In July 2003 he received his undergraduate degree from Universidad EAFIT and a fellowship to continue graduate studies at the same school. Agudelo has been composer and arranger for the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín, Orquesta Sinfónica de La Habana–Cuba, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León-España, Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad EAFIT, Banda Sinfónica Universidad de Antioquia, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil, University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra, U of M Contemporary Chamber Players, Ensamble Vocal Arcadia, Prizm Ensemble and Montecino piano trio, International Trio among other projects. His music has been played so far in: Colombia, Spain USA, China, Belgium, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Chile, Argentina, Hungary, Cuba and Japan. In April 2005. Victor won the Smit Composition Award, prize given to outstanding composition students at the University of Memphis. During the summer 2007, Agudelo went to The Shangai Conservatory - China with the University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra as assistant conductor and also playing his chamber music for piano and other instruments.  In December 2008, Agudelo received his Doctor In Music Arts degree in composition at The University of Memphis with Professors Kamran Ince and John Baur and minor in orchestra conducting with Pu-Qi Jiang and Kraig Williams. In March 2009, Victor won The ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award with the piece "Continental Prism". Currently, Agudelo is composition and theory professor at EAFIT University in Medellin- Colombia.

In 1985, after graduating in composition, he obtains a scholarship by the French government to study in Paris. In 1990 he returns to Peru to teach at the National Conservatory of Music as well as working as producer for Radio Filarmonia. In 1998 he returns to France, where he obtains a master in musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris. His works has been performed throughout South and North America and Europe.
