Biography

Agustín Fernández (born 1958) Following an early start as a folk singer and charango player in the late 1960s, Agustín Fernández studied composition in La Paz with Alberto Villalpando and in Japan with Takashi Iida and Akira Ifukube. In Britain he studied at Liverpool University and at London’s City University. He worked as harmony teacher at the National Conservatoire in La Paz, and as violinist and then principal viola with the Bolivian National Symphony Orchestra. His early works were performed by the main orchestras, choirs and chamber groups in Bolivia. In Britain, Teoponte was commissioned for the 1988 London International Opera Festival and The Wheel was commissioned by the Royal Opera House’s Garden Venture in 1992. Fuego and Peregrine have received premières at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. The orchestral- choral work Approaching Melmoth, a preliminary exploration towards an opera he is planning on Maturin’s Melmoth the Wanderer, was performed by Northern Sinfonia and NS Chorus with Sir Thomas Allen in the solo part. Mystical Dances for orchestra was premièred at the 2006 Huddersfield Festival. In 2010 his reconstructed Misa de Corpus Christi for two choirs and orchestra filled to capacity four major venues including Cochabamba Cathedral. In February 2011 Una música escondida received performances at Bass Hall by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. Born in Santiago, Chile in 1975. His musical initiation developed from a young age, participating in choruses and studying guitar and harmony in the Academy Projazz and with private tutors. He did professional studies in composition in the Professional Institute, Modern School of Music and subsequently obtained the degree of Master of Arts in the University of Chile. His principal teachers have been: Juan Orrego-Salas, Guillermo Rifo, Jorge Martínez, Luis José Recart, Aliocha Solovera, and Toly Ramírez. Since 1999 his works have been programmed in Chile’s major orchestras, such as the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra, Chilean Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Symphony Orchestra, Modern Orchestra, Chilean Chamber Orchestra, University of Concepción Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Los Andes, and Orquesta Mayor, among others. He has been commissioned by renowned soloists to write chamber music in various formats for concerts throughout Chile and abroad. His catalogue includes more than 35 diverse works. Among his awards are: First Place, “Jorge Peña Hen” Composition Competition for his symphonic work “La Caravana", 2003; El Sábado Magazine Young Leaders Prize, 2004; Medal of the 150th Anniverary Season of the Municipal Theater of Santiago, 2007; Diario Financiero prize for Successful Youth, 2008; Prize of the Circle of Art Critics, 2008; Altazor Prize, 2009. He has participated in the country’s main contemporary music festivals, as well as participating in the 150th Anniversary Season of the Municipal Theater of Santiago with his symphonic work “Historia del Tempo.” His work has also been selected on two occasions during “Season of Discovery “of the Chilean Symphony Orchestra. Biography

Mauricio Arias is a musician, composer, pianist and improviser, one of the most versatile Colombian musicians of his generation. He wrote Rapsodia Camaleónica for Piano, Trumpet and Orchestra on 2012, premiered it in Arizona and later the same year, presented the piece in Carnegie Hall in New York. Mr. Arias was featured as the first Colombian guest artist at the Festival Internacional de Piano de Bogotá. Mr. Arias has been featured as a soloist with Orquesta Sinfónica de Colombia, Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuba, Filarmónica del Valle, ASU Symphony Orchestra, Münster Hochschule Orchestra, Sinfónica del Tolima, Joven Sinfónica de Colombia, among others. He has been awarded different prizes at international piano competitions, such as Kingsville Isabel Scionti (Texas, 1st prize), Schmidbauer (Texas, 2nd prize), Peabody Mason (Boston, 2nd prize), Panama (special prize for best Latin American pianist), Cervantes (Havana, finalist). Prior to his studies in the USA, he was the winner of the First National Chopin Piano Competition (2005) and the winner of the UIS National piano competition in Colombia. Mr. Arias was born in Bogotá, Colombia, where he began his piano studies at age thirteen with professor Ludmiła Weber, with whom he studied until his graduation from Corpas University. He later studied with Baruch Meir and Robert Hamilton at Arizona State University (MM and DMA). He has participated in courses with Joaquín Achúcarro, Eteri Andjaparidze and Vladimir Feltsman. His composition teachers include Rodney Rogers and Jorge H. Pinzón. On 2012-2013, Mr. Arias served as teacher at Arizona School for the Arts. His works include Rapsodia Camaleónica, Toccata Bachkovsky (performed by Sydney Contemporary Orchestra musicians in Sydney), Dynamo for string quartet, Snippets for bayan accordion and, recently In Memory of 21 angels (2014) for trumpet and piano, premiered during the First Eric Aubier Latin American Trumpet Competition in Medellín. Mr. Arias has taken part in SYNTHETIS summer courses for composers, whose faculty has included Zygmunt Krauze, Chen Yi, Paul Patterson, Paweł Hendrich, Alessandro Solbiati, Philippe Manoury, Simon Steen-Andersen, Martijn Padding and Zhou Long. Mr. Arias is currently professor of piano at the University of the Andes. He is also a freelance composer and collaborative pianist.

In December 2008, Agudelo received his Doctor In Music Arts degree in composition at The University of Memphis with Professors Kamran Ince and John Baur and minor in orchestra conducting with Pu-Qi Jiang and Kraig Williams.
