Biography

Jimmy López was born in Lima, Peru in 1978. In 1998 was admitted to the National Conservatory of Music in Lima where he studied with renowned Peruvian composer Enrique Iturriaga. In July 2000 he was admitted to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland where he studied with Veli-Matti Puumala and Eero Hämeenniemi. He has been awarded the ORCHESTRA COMPOSITION AWARD - SävellYS 2006 Composition Competition (Finland) for his orchestral work “The Plea”; the STIPENDIENPREIS at the International Course for Contemporary Music, Darmstadt 2006 (Germany) for his chamber work “Kraftmaschine”; an HONORABLE MENTION at the Irino Composition Prize for Chamber Music 2005 (Japan) for his string quartet “La Caresse du Couteau”; the FIRST PRIZE - ALEA III 2003 International Composition Competition (USA) for his piece “K’asa” for violin and piano; and the ORCHESTRA PRIZE - CCA International Composition Competition 2002 (Taiwan) for his orchestral work “Carnynx”. In May 2004 his ballet "Los Magos del Silencio" was presented in Lima. Later on in the same year, his Concerto for Koto and Orchestra was premiered by the UMA Kamerorkest in The Netherlands with Makiko Goto as soloist. In June 2005, "Kraftmaschine", for recorders and percussion, was premiered in Germany. This piece was commissioned by the ADevantgarde Festival in collaboration with the Orff- Zentrum, Munich. His orchestral work Fiesta! has been premiered by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and subsequent performances with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and at the Aspen Music Festival. Jimmy López continues his studies at the University of California at Berkeley where he is in the PhD program

Biography

Celso Garrido-Lecca was born in Piura, Peru in 1926. He began his musical training in the National Conservatory of Lima, later continuing his studies in composition with professor Rodolfo Holzmann in the same institution. In 1950, he traveled with a scholarship to Santiago, Chile, to conclude and master his musical studies. Four years later he became the musical adviser and composer of the Institute of the Theater at the University of Chile. He stayed there for ten years and during that time he wrote a large amount of music for the various theater works. In 1965 he began to teach in the Department of Composition in the Faculty of Science and Musical Arts at the same University, later becoming Chairman of the Department. In 1964 Garrido-Lecca won a scholarship to work with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Upon his return to Peru in 1973, he became Professor of Composition of the National Conservatory of Lima where, soon after, he was appointed Director of this institution until 1979. The musical production of Garrido-Lecca includes chamber and symphonic works, which have been performed in numerous concerts and festivals in America, Europe and Asia. Among his most renowned works are “Intihuatana” for string quartet, “Antaras” for double string quartet and double bass, “Laudes I and II” for orchestra, “Elegía a Machu-Picchu” (performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1967), “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra”, “Simphony Nº2”, “Concerto for Guitar”, and the multimedia work “El Movimiento y el Sueño” for double choir, two narrators and orchestra, among others. During his life as a composer he has been awarded many composition prizes both in Peru and in Chile. Among his award-winning compositios are “Divertimento”, “El movimiento y el sueño”, “Trio para un nuevo tiempo”, “Cuarteto Nº3” and “Retablos sinfónicos”. Since 1983 he traveled frequently to Chile, actively participating in the musical life of that country. He is member of the Composer’s Society of Chile and of the Copyright Society SCD. He has been awarded the International Institute of Education scholarship in 1961 and the Guggenheim Foundation scholarship in 1963. In 1982 he was decorated by the Spanish government with the Order of Civilian Merit. In 1997 the government of Chile awarded him the “Bernardo O’Higgins” Order for his contribution to the strenghtening of the relations betwewn Chile and Peru. In 2000 he won the "Tomás Luis de Victoria" Prize from the Fundación Autor SGAE of Spain.

Campos, José Carlos (b. 1957)

Biography

José Carlos Campos was born in Lima, Peru in 1957, where later studied at the National Conservatory of Music with Edgar Valcárcel, Pedro Asato and Celso Garrido-Lecca. In 1985, after graduating in composition, he obtains a scholarship by the French government to study in Paris. In 1990 he returns to Peru to teach at the National Conservatory of Music as well as working as producer for Radio Filarmonia. In 1998 he returns to France, where he obtains a master in musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris. His works has been performed throughout South and North America and Europe.

Biography

Singer, lyricist, and composer Clotilde Arias (1901-1959) was born in Iquitos, Peru, on the shores of the Amazon, and went to the USA in 1924 to study music, supporting herself by playing the piano for silent movies. She composed the famous Hymn of the Americas, and wrote the original Spanish lyrics for a number of popular songs that have become well-known in translation (‘Rum and Coca-Cola’, “You are Everything to Me’). _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ La cantante, liricista y compositora peruana Clotilde Arias (1901-1959) nació en Iquitos, Perú, en la rivera del Amazonas. Viajó a los Estados Unidos en 1924 a estudiar música; allí se mantenía económicamente tocando piano para películas mudas. Clotilde Arias compuso el famoso “Himno de las Américas” y escribió letras originales en español para una serie de canciones populares de gran fama (“Ron y Coca-Cola”, “Tú eres todo para mí”).

Benzecry, Esteban (b. 1970)

Biography

Argentinean composer born in 1970, Esteban Benzecry is one of South America's most renowned young composers. He studied musical composition with Sergio Hualpa and Haydee Gerardi in Argentina, and moved to Paris in 1997, where he studied composition with Jacques Charpentier's, Professor of the Conservatoire Superieur de Paris. He obtained the "Premier Prix a l'unanimitè" in composition in 1999. He also studied composition with Paul Méfano, and Electro acoustic music with Luis Naon and Laurent Cuniot. He is the author of three symphonies (his first symphony, "El compendio de la vida" from 1993 is inspired on four of his own canvases) as well as symphonic and chamber works. His most recent works attempt a fusion between rhythms with Latin American roots and the diverse aesthetic currents of European contemporary music creating, a personal language, an imaginary folklore. "Le Monde de la Musique" has called him a distant heir to Villa Lobos and Ginastera because of his imaginative use of the Latin American musical patrimony. His works have been played in Europe and the United States. In 2004, he received the Fondation groupe d'entreprise Banque Populaire-Natexis Award for music. He is Resident Composer at the Casa de Velazquez of Madrid 2004-2006 (Academie de France a Madrid). In 2008 he received a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship for Music Composition. He has been a fellow of the "Interamerican Music Friends of Washington" (USA) , Mozarteum Argentino and Academie des Beaux-Arts de l'Institut de France. In 1995 he was invited as Resident Composer at the Yehudi Menuhin Academy (Switzerland). Benzecry lives in Paris since 1997 ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Compositor argentino nacido en Lisboa en 1970 (de padres argentinos), después de crecer en la Argentina ha vivido en Francia desde 1997, y obtuvo la nacionalidad francesa en 2011. Desde 1997 reside en París, Francia, donde realizó estudios de composición en el conservatorio de París bajo la guía de los maestros Jacques Charpentier y Paul Mefano, obteniendo un premier prix a la unanimidad en composición musical. También realizó cursos de música electroacústica (nouvelles techniques) dictado por los maestros Luis Naon y Laurent Cuniot en el Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris. En Argentina paralelamente a sus estudios de Bellas Artes en la universidad "Prilidiano Pueyrredon" coronados por un título de profesor nacional de pintura, estudia composición con los maestros Sergio Hualpa y Haydee Geradi. Autor de tres sinfonías, (su primera sinfonía escrita en 1993,"El compendio de la vida" esta inspirada en cuatro pinturas de su autoría), varias obras sinfónicas y de cámara. Sus obras más recientes intentan una fusión entre los ritmos y raíces latinoamericanas que toma como fuente de inspiración, y las diferentes corrientes estéticas de la música contemporánea europea creando así un lenguaje personal, un folclore imaginario. Una crítica publicada en "Le Monde de la Musique" (07/2001), lo califica como un heredero lejano de Villa-Lobos y Alberto Ginastera por la utilización imaginativa del patrimonio musical latinoamericano. La Académie des Beaux-arts de l’Institut de France le ha otorgado varios premios: en 1999 el Premio Delmas; en 2002 el Premio Tronchet; y, en el 2006, el Premio Georges Wildenstein. En el 2004 gana el premio de composición de la Fundación Groupe d’entreprise Banque Populaire-Natexis. En el 2008 recibe el premio de la John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation de New York.
