Biography

Jimmy López was born in Lima, Peru in 1978. In 1998 was admitted to the National Conservatory of Music in Lima where he studied with renowned Peruvian composer Enrique Iturriaga. In July 2000 he was admitted to the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland where he studied with Veli-Matti Puumala and Eero Hämeenniemi. He has been awarded the ORCHESTRA COMPOSITION AWARD - SävellYS 2006 Composition Competition (Finland) for his orchestral work “The Plea”; the STIPENDIENPREIS at the International Course for Contemporary Music, Darmstadt 2006 (Germany) for his chamber work “Kraftmaschine”; an HONORABLE MENTION at the Irino Composition Prize for Chamber Music 2005 (Japan) for his string quartet “La Caresse du Couteau”; the FIRST PRIZE - ALEA III 2003 International Composition Competition (USA) for his piece “K’asa” for violin and piano; and the ORCHESTRA PRIZE - CCA International Composition Competition 2002 (Taiwan) for his orchestral work “Carnynx”. In May 2004 his ballet "Los Magos del Silencio" was presented in Lima. Later on in the same year, his Concerto for Koto and Orchestra was premiered by the UMA Kamerorkest in The Netherlands with Makiko Goto as soloist. In June 2005, "Kraftmaschine", for recorders and percussion, was premiered in Germany. This piece was commissioned by the ADevantgarde Festival in collaboration with the Orff- Zentrum, Munich. His orchestral work Fiesta! has been premiered by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, and subsequent performances with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and at the Aspen Music Festival. Jimmy López continues his studies at the University of California at Berkeley where he is in the PhD program

Biography

Born in Mexico City, Antonio Juan-Marcos began his musical training studying classical guitar; he later studied composition, piano and guitar at the Boston Conservatory. In 2003 he continued his bachelor’s and master’s degree at the “Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et Danse de Paris’’, where he graduated with honors with the piece “Arder Aprender.” From 2012 to 2013 he participated in the Electroacoustic Composition Course at the “Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique / Musique’’ (IRCAM). He has studied with some of the most renowned composers such as Kaija Saariaho, O. Golijov, Stefano Gervasoni, Narcís Bonet, Allain Gaussin, Philippe Leroux and Franck Bedrossian. Antonio is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in Musical Composition at UC Berkeley, where he also works as a pro- fessor of harmony. Antonio Juan-Marcos has recently been awarded with the Gold Medal-Best of Show honors at the Global Music Awards for his piece “Nocturno Eléctrico’’; he also received the prestigious “Eisner Prize for the Highest Achievement in the Creative Arts” on behalf of the University of California Berkeley for the ensemble of his recent compositions, as well as the first place in the composition competition “Nicola De Lorenzo Prize in Music Composition’’ granted by the Department of Music at UC Berkeley. Important recent world premieres include: “Amanece’’- for countertenor and orchestra (2014) written as a celebration of the birth centenary of the literature Nobel Prize winner, Octavio Paz, as well as “Nocturno Eléctrico’’- for electric guitar and orchestra (2015). It is worth noting that Alejandro Marcovich (guitarist, founder of the famous Latin American rock group “Caifanes”) was the soloist for “Nocturno Eléctrico’’. Both pieces were commissioned by The Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra. “Amanece’’ will receive its American premiere in December 2016 by the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, in a program next to Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Mr. Juan-Marcos is currently composing a song cycle for the internationally known ensemble “Les Folies Françoises’’ in which he musicalizes four sonnets attributed to Antonio Vivaldi. These sonnets were written in correlation with the violin concerti “The Four Seasons’’. Antonio Juan-Marcos is the third composer to receive a commission from the “Les Folies Françoises’’. The first two composers to appear in this select catalog where Kaija Saariaho (2009) and Thierry Pécou (2013). Antonio has also received a commission from the “Festival Internacional Cervantino” to compose a monodrama for voice, video and ensemble inspired by the short story “Macario” by Juan Rulfo, one of Latin America’s most prominent writers and a fundamental source of the literary movement known as “Magical Realism”. This piece will be premiered by the “Ensemble 2e2m” in 2017 and will celebrate Mr. Rulfo birth centenary. Additional commissions include new orchestral music for some of the most important Mexican national orchestras. His pieces have been presented in the United States, France, Belgium, Spain and his native Mexico, under the direction of José Areán, David Milnes, Zsolt Nagy, Kanako Abe, Jean-Philippe Wurtz, Laurent Cuniot and Pierre Roullier. Antonio’s works are included in the repertoires of prestigious ensembles and orchestras such as the “Orchestre National de Lorraine’’, Mexico City Philharmonic Orchestra, “Ensemble InterContemporain”, “Eco Ensemble,” “L’Instant Donné”, “L’Ensemble Multilatérale’’, amongst others. His piece for cello and electronics ‘’El Afilador’’ was recorded by the cellist Marie Ythier for Evidence Classics records (distributed by Harmonia Mundi). Antonio has been selected to participate in important festivals and academies such as: Acanthes (France)- where he studied with Salvatore Sciarrino, Musicalta (France), and the “Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Córdoba” (Spain) – where he studied guitar and composition with Leo Brouwer.

Garrido-Lecca, Celso (b. 1926)

Biography

Celso Garrido-Lecca was born in Piura, Peru in 1926. He began his musical training in the National Conservatory of Lima, later continuing his studies in composition with professor Rodolfo Holzmann in the same institution. In 1950, he traveled with a scholarship to Santiago, Chile, to conclude and master his musical studies. Four years later he became the musical adviser and composer of the Institute of the Theater at the University of Chile. He stayed there for ten years and during that time he wrote a large amount of music for the various theater works. In 1965 he began to teach in the Department of Composition in the Faculty of Science and Musical Arts at the same University, later becoming Chairman of the Department. In 1964 Garrido-Lecca won a scholarship to work with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Upon his return to Peru in 1973, he became Professor of Composition of the National Conservatory of Lima where, soon after, he was appointed Director of this institution until 1979. The musical production of Garrido-Lecca includes chamber and symphonic works, which have been performed in numerous concerts and festivals in America, Europe and Asia. Among his most renowned works are “Intihuatana” for string quartet, “Antaras” for double string quartet and double bass, “Laudes I and II” for orchestra, “Elegía a Machu-Picchu” (performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1967), “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra”, “Simphony Nº2”, “Concerto for Guitar”, and the multimedia work “El Movimiento y el Sueño” for double choir, two narrators and orchestra, among others. During his life as a composer he has been awarded many composition prizes both in Peru and in Chile. Among his award-winning compositios are “Divertimento”, “El movimiento y el sueño”, “Trio para un nuevo tiempo”, “Cuarteto Nº3” and “Retablos sinfónicos”. Since 1983 he traveled frequently to Chile, actively participating in the musical life of that country. He is member of the Composer’s Society of Chile and of the Copyright Society SCD. He has been awarded the International Institute of Education scholarship in 1961 and the Guggenheim Foundation scholarship in 1963. In 1982 he was decorated by the Spanish government with the Order of Civilian Merit. In 1997 the government of Chile awarded him the “Bernardo O’Higgins” Order for his contribution to the strenghtening of the relations betwewn Chile and Peru. In 2000 he won the "Tomás Luis de Victoria" Prize from the Fundación Autor SGAE of Spain.

Garrido-Lecca, Celso (b. 1926)

Biography

Celso Garrido-Lecca was born in Piura, Peru in 1926. He began his musical training in the National Conservatory of Lima, later continuing his studies in composition with professor Rodolfo Holzmann in the same institution. In 1950, he traveled with a scholarship to Santiago, Chile, to conclude and master his musical studies. Four years later he became the musical adviser and composer of the Institute of the Theater at the University of Chile. He stayed there for ten years and during that time he wrote a large amount of music for the various theater works. In 1965 he began to teach in the Department of Composition in the Faculty of Science and Musical Arts at the same University, later becoming Chairman of the Department. In 1964 Garrido-Lecca won a scholarship to work with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Upon his return to Peru in 1973, he became Professor of Composition of the National Conservatory of Lima where, soon after, he was appointed Director of this institution until 1979. The musical production of Garrido-Lecca includes chamber and symphonic works, which have been performed in numerous concerts and festivals in America, Europe and Asia. Among his most renowned works are “Intihuatana” for string quartet, “Antaras” for double string quartet and double bass, “Laudes I and II” for orchestra, “Elegía a Machu-Picchu” (performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1967), “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra”, “Simphony Nº2”, “Concerto for Guitar”, and the multimedia work “El Movimiento y el Sueño” for double choir, two narrators and orchestra, among others. During his life as a composer he has been awarded many composition prizes both in Peru and in Chile. Among his award-winning compositios are “Divertimento”, “El movimiento y el sueño”, “Trio para un nuevo tiempo”, “Cuarteto Nº3” and “Retablos sinfónicos”. Since 1983 he traveled frequently to Chile, actively participating in the musical life of that country. He is member of the Composer’s Society of Chile and of the Copyright Society SCD. He has been awarded the International Institute of Education scholarship in 1961 and the Guggenheim Foundation scholarship in 1963. In 1982 he was decorated by the Spanish government with the Order of Civilian Merit. In 1997 the government of Chile awarded him the “Bernardo O’Higgins” Order for his contribution to the strenghtening of the relations betwewn Chile and Peru. In 2000 he won the "Tomás Luis de Victoria" Prize from the Fundación Autor SGAE of Spain.

Campos, José Carlos (b. 1957)

Biography

José Carlos Campos was born in Lima, Peru in 1957, where later studied at the National Conservatory of Music with Edgar Valcárcel, Pedro Asato and Celso Garrido-Lecca. In 1985, after graduating in composition, he obtains a scholarship by the French government to study in Paris. In 1990 he returns to Peru to teach at the National Conservatory of Music as well as working as producer for Radio Filarmonia. In 1998 he returns to France, where he obtains a master in musicology at the Sorbonne in Paris. His works has been performed throughout South and North America and Europe.
