Biography

Celso Garrido-Lecca was born in Piura, Peru in 1926. He began his musical training in the National Conservatory of Lima, later continuing his studies in composition with professor Rodolfo Holzmann in the same institution. In 1950, he traveled with a scholarship to Santiago, Chile, to conclude and master his musical studies. Four years later he became the musical adviser and composer of the Institute of the Theater at the University of Chile. He stayed there for ten years and during that time he wrote a large amount of music for the various theater works. In 1965 he began to teach in the Department of Composition in the Faculty of Science and Musical Arts at the same University, later becoming Chairman of the Department. In 1964 Garrido-Lecca won a scholarship to work with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Upon his return to Peru in 1973, he became Professor of Composition of the National Conservatory of Lima where, soon after, he was appointed Director of this institution until 1979. The musical production of Garrido-Lecca includes chamber and symphonic works, which have been performed in numerous concerts and festivals in America, Europe and Asia. Among his most renowned works are “Intihuatana” for string quartet, “Antaras” for double string quartet and double bass, “Laudes I and II” for orchestra, “Elegía a Machu-Picchu” (performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1967), “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra”, “Simphony Nº2”, “Concerto for Guitar”, and the multimedia work “El Movimiento y el Sueño” for double choir, two narrators and orchestra, among others. During his life as a composer he has been awarded many composition prizes both in Peru and in Chile. Among his award-winning compositios are “Divertimento”, “El movimiento y el sueño”, “Trio para un nuevo tiempo”, “Cuarteto Nº3” and “Retablos sinfónicos”. Since 1983 he traveled frequently to Chile, actively participating in the musical life of that country. He is member of the Composer’s Society of Chile and of the Copyright Society SCD. He has been awarded the International Institute of Education scholarship in 1961 and the Guggenheim Foundation scholarship in 1963. In 1982 he was decorated by the Spanish government with the Order of Civilian Merit. In 1997 the government of Chile awarded him the “Bernardo O’Higgins” Order for his contribution to the strenghtening of the relations betwewn Chile and Peru. In 2000 he won the "Tomás Luis de Victoria" Prize from the Fundación Autor SGAE of Spain.

Biography

Born in Santiago, Chile in 1975. His musical initiation developed from a young age, participating in choruses and studying guitar and harmony in the Academy Projazz and with private tutors. He did professional studies in composition in the Professional Institute, Modern School of Music and subsequently obtained the degree of Master of Arts in the University of Chile. His principal teachers have been: Juan Orrego-Salas, Guillermo Rifo, Jorge Martínez, Luis José Recart, Aliocha Solovera, and Toly Ramírez. Since 1999 his works have been programmed in Chile’s major orchestras, such as the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra, Chilean Symphony Orchestra, National Youth Symphony Orchestra, Modern Orchestra, Chilean Chamber Orchestra, University of Concepción Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Los Andes, and Orquesta Mayor, among others. He has been commissioned by renowned soloists to write chamber music in various formats for concerts throughout Chile and abroad. His catalogue includes more than 35 diverse works. Among his awards are: First Place, “Jorge Peña Hen” Composition Competition for his symphonic work “La Caravana", 2003; El Sábado Magazine Young Leaders Prize, 2004; Medal of the 150th Anniverary Season of the Municipal Theater of Santiago, 2007; Diario Financiero prize for Successful Youth, 2008; Prize of the Circle of Art Critics, 2008; Altazor Prize, 2009. He has participated in the country’s main contemporary music festivals, as well as participating in the 150th Anniversary Season of the Municipal Theater of Santiago with his symphonic work “Historia del Tempo.” His work has also been selected on two occasions during “Season of Discovery “of the Chilean Symphony Orchestra. His work as composer and producer provides more than 10 recordings, among which are: “Música Descubierta” (FONDART 2003); “Música y Poesía” (Sello EM); “Viola Chilena del siglo XXI” (FONDART 2001); “Cuarteto Iniesta” (FONDART 2003), “Siete proposiciones y un epílogo” (MusicActual 2008), “Viento Blanco” (Oveja Negra 2009), as well as music for film and theater. He studies conducting with Maestro Eduardo Browne. He is director and founder of the collective "Los Musicantes de Projazz.” He also serves as the Director of Composition Careers in the Projazz Professional Institute. In March 2008 he premiered his opera “Viento Blanco” in the Teatro Municipal in Santiago with high praise from critics and the public. Biography

Winner of the 2009 ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award, Colombian composer Victor Agudelo began studying classical piano and music theory at the Colombo-Venezolano School of Music. Years later Agudelo continued his popular piano studies at the Colegio de Música de Medellín. In 1998 he attended to the Universidad EAFIT to continue his music studies with a concentration in composition. Víctor studied composition and music theory with professors Andrés Posada, Moises Bertrán, Mario Gómez Vignes and Sergio Mesa. He also took piano with Lise Frank and choral conducting with Cecilia Espinosa. In 2000 and 2001 Agudelo won the EAFIT's music department composition contests with the works: "Credo" and "Sangre de Hincha" (Blood of the Fan) respectively. In July 2003 he received his undergraduate degree from Universidad EAFIT and a fellowship to continue graduate studies at the same school. Agudelo has been composer and arranger for the Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá, Orquesta Filarmónica de Medellín, Orquesta Sinfónica de La Habana–Cuba, Orquesta Sinfónica de Castilla y León-España, Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad EAFIT, Banda Sinfónica Universidad de Antioquia, Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil, University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra, U of M Contemporary Chamber Players, Ensamble Vocal Arcadia, Prizm Ensemble and Montecino piano trio, International Trio among other projects. His music has been played so far in: Colombia, Spain USA, China, Belgium, Germany, Australia, Sweden, Chile, Argentina, Hungary, Cuba and Japan. In April 2005. Victor won the Smit Composition Award, prize given to outstanding composition students at the University of Memphis. During the summer 2007, Agudelo went to The Shangai Conservatory - China with the University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra as assistant conductor and also playing his chamber music for piano and other instruments.  In December 2008, Agudelo received his Doctor In Music Arts degree in composition at The University of Memphis with Professors Kamran Ince and John Baur and minor in orchestra conducting with Pu-Qi Jiang and Kraig Williams. In March 2009, Victor won The ASCAP Foundation Morton Gould Young Composer Award with the piece "Continental Prism". Currently, Agudelo is composition and theory professor at EAFIT University in Medellin- Colombia.

Celso Garrido-Lecca was born in Piura, Peru in 1926. Biography

The renowned Peruvian composer Enrique Iturriaga was born in Lima in 1918. Between 1924 and 1939 he studied piano with Lily Rosay and began his studies in Theory and Harmony with Andrés Sas. After a time studying Economics at the Catholic University of Peru, he decided to dedicate himself to composition and was admitted to the National Conservatory of Music, where he studied this specialty with Rodolfo Holzmann from 1945 to 1950 and graduated as Professor of Composition in 1954. Still a student, in 1947 he was awarded the National Prize "Duncker-Lavalle" for his work “Canción y Muerte de Rolando” for voice and orchestra, with text by the poet Jorge Eduardo Eielson. The work was premiered in 1949 by Theo Buchwald and the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru, with Gloria Colmenares as the soloist. In 1950 he travelled to Paris thanks to a scholarship from the French government, and studied with Arthur Honegger during 1950 and 1951. Upon his return to Peru, along with composition and teaching, he worked as chorus conductor and took part in the school music scene until 1958. Between 1953 and 1960 worked as a music critic for the newspaper "El Comercio” in Lima. In April of 1957 he was awarded the "Juan Landaeta" Prize for his work “Suite” for orchestra, in the competition celebrating the occasion of the Second Latin-American Festival of Caracas. The jury was comprised of Aaron Copland, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Chávez, Domingo Santa Cruz and Juan Bautista Plaza. “Suite” was premiered by Carlos Chávez in Caracas, and a year later in Lima. In 1963 he travelled to the United States to acquaint himself with its universities and other higher institutions in the music field, and to study the work being done there. He visited Columbia University, Harvard University, University of Rochester, North Pacific University, University of Texas at Austin, Howard University, University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, University of California, Los Angeles, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and The Juilliard School, among others. That same year he travelled to Santiago, having been invited by the University of Chile to attend the Pan- American Congress of Musical Educators. The following year, in 1964, he returned to Chile to serve as a jury member at the Biennial Competition of Chilean Music. In 1965 he composed his symphonic work “Vivencias”, commissioned by the Committee for the Third Pan- American Festival in Washington D.C. and premiered by Lukas Foss and the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra. In Peru he has also written music for the theatrical works of Sebastián Salazar Bondy, Julio Ramón Ribeyro and Alfonso La Torre, among others. Maestro Iturriaga has taught music from 1957 to present, mainly at the National Conservatory of Music (Composition, Harmony and Analysis), where he was Director between 1973 and 1976, and where he is, at present, Emeritus Professor. Until 1987 he was also a professor in the Arts Department – and is now Emeritus Professor– of the School of Letters at the prestigious National University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas. Among his other works that have received awards are “Homenaje a Stravinsky”, composed in 1971 for cajón and orchestra, for which he received again the "Duncker-Lavalle" prize, and his Symphony “Junín y Ayacucho”, composed in 1974, for which he won the "Army of Peru" Prize. Enrique Iturriaga is co-author of the book “Music in Peru”, published by Patronato Popular y Porvenir in 1985. In 1988 The National University of San Marcos published his “Method of Melodic Composition”, a synthesis of the work that he developed in Lima and Quito for the Regional Program of Musicology (UNESCO-PNDP) between 1978 and 1981. In addition to the aforementioned works, other highlights are his works for piano: “Pregón y danza, “La máquina”, “Ensayos interválicos” and “Tres piezas para piano”; his works for voice and piano: “Cuatro poemas de Javier Heraud”, “Dos ejercicios poéticos” and “Tres poemas de ‘Sin título’ de Eielson”; his chamber works: “Expresiones” for violin, “Llamadas y fuga para un Santiago” for brass ensemble, “Manormeyor” for string quartet, “Pequeña suite” for violin and cello, and “Paisaje” for flute and guitar; and his choral works: “Las cumbres”, “Adivina, adivinanza…”, “Tres huaynos de Navidad”, “Tres adivinanzas” for children, “Viene y va y vueltas da” and “Desiertos”; and other works: “Obertura para una comedia”, “…De la lírica campesina”, “Tres canciones para coro y orquesta” and “Tres danzas de William Byrd”. In celebration of his 90th birthday, in October 2008 and March 2009 Enrique Iturriaga was invited to attend concerts of his “Sinfonía Junín y Ayacucho” in the cities of Fort Worth and Madrid, respectively. Both presentations were under the baton of renowned conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and the concert in Madrid, with the National Symphony Orchestra of Spain, was recorded and broadcast by Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE).

In 1965 he composed his symphonic work “Vivencias”, commissioned by the Committee for the Third Pan- American Festival in Washington D.C. and premiered by Lukas Foss and the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra. In Peru he has also written music for the theatrical works of Sebastián Salazar Bondy, Julio Ramón Ribeyro and Alfonso La Torre, among others. Maestro Iturriaga has taught music from 1957 to present, mainly at the National Conservatory of Music (Composition, Harmony and Analysis), where he was Director between 1973 and 1976, and where he is, at present, Emeritus Professor. Until 1987 he was also a professor in the Arts Department – and is now Emeritus Professor– of the School of Letters at the prestigious National University of San Marcos, the oldest university in the Americas. Among his other works that have received awards are “Homenaje a Stravinsky”, composed in 1971 for cajón and orchestra, for which he received again the "Duncker-Lavalle" prize, and his Symphony “Junín y Ayacucho”, composed in 1974, for which he won the "Army of Peru" Prize. Enrique Iturriaga is co-author of the book “Music in Peru”, published by Patronato Popular y Porvenir in 1985. In 1988 The National University of San Marcos published his “Method of Melodic Composition”, a synthesis of the work that he developed in Lima and Quito for the Regional Program of Musicology (UNESCO-PNDP) between 1978 and 1981. In addition to the aforementioned works, other highlights are his works for piano: “Pregón y danza, “La máquina”, “Ensayos interválicos” and “Tres piezas para piano”; his works for voice and piano: “Cuatro poemas de Javier Heraud”, “Dos ejercicios poéticos” and “Tres poemas de ‘Sin título’ de Eielson”; his chamber works: “Expresiones” for violin, “Llamadas y fuga para un Santiago” for brass ensemble, “Manormeyor” for string quartet, “Pequeña suite” for violin and cello, and “Paisaje” for flute and guitar; and his choral works: “Las cumbres”, “Adivina, adivinanza…”, “Tres huaynos de Navidad”, “Tres adivinanzas” for children, “Viene y va y vueltas da” and “Desiertos”; and other works: “Obertura para una comedia”, “…De la lírica campesina”, “Tres canciones para coro y orquesta” and “Tres danzas de William Byrd”. In celebration of his 90th birthday, in October 2008 and March 2009 Enrique Iturriaga was invited to attend concerts of his “Sinfonía Junín y Ayacucho” in the cities of Fort Worth and Madrid, respectively. Both presentations were under the baton of renowned conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, and the concert in Madrid, with the National Symphony Orchestra of Spain, was recorded and broadcast by Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE).

Biography

Diego Vega is a Colombian composer. His music has been performed in some of the most important concert halls in the United States, Europe and Latin America by ensembles such as the Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Eighth Blackbird, Ensemble X, Alea III, the Colombian National Symphony, the Bogotá Philharmonic, the Youth Orchestra of the Americas, the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, the Quintet of the Americas, the Soli Chamber Ensemble, and internationally acclaimed soloists like pianist Stephen Prutsman, clarinetist José Franch-Ballester, cellist Andrés Díaz, and flutist Bradley Garner, among others. Diego has written commissioned works for the Colombian National Symphony, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, the Cornell Symphony and the Cornell Chorus, and the Salvi Foundation and the Cartagena International Music Festival. Vega has also been awarded the National Prize of Music in Composition in 2004, the Ensemble X composition competition in 2004, Alea III 20th anniversary prize in 2002, one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the Year in 1996 in Colombia, and prestigious scholarships such as Fulbright and the Sage Fellowship at Cornell University. Vega holds degrees from Cornell University (DMA), University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music (MM), and Universidad Javeriana (BM) in Bogota, Colombia, and has served as faculty at Syracuse University and Universidad Javeriana. Currently he is professor of music composition and theory at UNLV. Among his composition teachers are Guillermo Gaviria, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, Joel Hoffman, Roberto Sierra, and Steven Stucky. Diego Vega has written music for soloists, a variety of chamber groups, symphony orchestras, wind ensembles, choral ensembles, computer and electronic music. Biography

Celso Garrido-Lecca was born in Piura, Peru in 1926. He began his musical training in the National Conservatory of Lima, later continuing his studies in composition with professor Rodolfo Holzmann in the same institution. In 1950, he traveled with a scholarship to Santiago, Chile, to conclude and master his musical studies. Four years later he became the musical adviser and composer of the Institute of the Theater at the University of Chile. He stayed there for ten years and during that time he wrote a large amount of music for the various theater works. In 1965 he began to teach in the Department of Composition in the Faculty of Science and Musical Arts at the same University, later becoming Chairman of the Department. In 1964 Garrido-Lecca won a scholarship to work with Aaron Copland at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Upon his return to Peru in 1973, he became Professor of Composition of the National Conservatory of Lima where, soon after, he was appointed Director of this institution until 1979. The musical production of Garrido-Lecca includes chamber and symphonic works, which have been performed in numerous concerts and festivals in America, Europe and Asia. Among his most renowned works are “Intihuatana” for string quartet, “Antaras” for double string quartet and double bass, “Laudes I and II” for orchestra, “Elegía a Machu-Picchu” (performed by the New York Philharmonic in 1967), “Concerto for Cello and Orchestra”, “Simphony Nº2”, “Concerto for Guitar”, and the multimedia work “El Movimiento y el Sueño” for double choir, two narrators and orchestra, among others. During his life as a composer he has been awarded many composition prizes both in Peru and in Chile. Among his award-winning compositios are “Divertimento”, “El movimiento y el sueño”, “Trio para un nuevo tiempo”, “Cuarteto Nº3” and “Retablos sinfónicos”. Since 1983 he traveled frequently to Chile, actively participating in the musical life of that country. He is member of the Composer’s Society of Chile and of the Copyright Society SCD. He has been awarded the International Institute of Education scholarship in 1961 and the Guggenheim Foundation scholarship in 1963. In 1982 he was decorated by the Spanish government with the Order of Civilian Merit. In 1997 the government of Chile awarded him the “Bernardo O’Higgins” Order for his contribution to the strenghtening of the relations betwewn Chile and Peru. In 2000 he won the "Tomás Luis de Victoria" Prize from the Fundación Autor SGAE of Spain.
