An "undeniably exciting composer" (Opera News) with "a virtuoso mastery of the modern orchestra" (The New Yorker), Jimmy López's works have been performed by leading orchestras worldwide, including all Big Five American orchestras, at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall (BBC Proms), and the Concertgebouw.

López is Composer-in-Residence with San Diego Symphony and Orchestre symphonique de Montréal for the 2025–27 seasons. He previously held residencies with Houston Symphony (2017–2020) and served as Mead Composer-Curator with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2024–25). His violin concerto Aurora was nominated for a 2022 Latin Grammy, and his celebrated Fiesta! has received over 150 performances worldwide. His opera Bel Canto, commissioned by Lyric Opera of Chicago, premiered to wide acclaim and was broadcast nationally on PBS.

A native of Lima, López studied at the city's National Conservatory of Music before earning a Master's degree from the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.
