Inspired by Cervantes’ "Don Quixote" and "The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda," Symphony Nº1: The Travails of Persiles and Sigismunda by Peruvian composer Jimmy López Bellido captures the epic journey of its protagonists from Scandinavia to Rome. This symphony, written in celebration of the fourth centenary of Cervantes’ death, brings to life the spirit, grandeur, and humor of the novel through its four movements.
The first movement ventures into new musical territories, while the second offers a calm, woodwind-led melody. The third movement is festive, incorporating Latin American rhythms and instruments like maracas and bongo. The final movement ties together themes from previous movements, culminating in a powerful and triumphant climax. This symphony stands as a testament to López Bellido's admiration for Cervantes and his own cosmopolitan experiences across Peru, Finland, France, and the United States.
