“Colores de la Cruz del Sur” (Colors of the Southern Cross) by Argentinian composer Esteban Benzecry captures the rich and diverse musical traditions of South America. Each movement represents a different "color" or region of the Southern Hemisphere, blending techniques such as pentatonic scales, atonality, minimalism, and polyrhythms with Latin American folk elements.
From the ancient Incan solar calendar in "Intihuatana," to the clear, starry skies of "The Stars of Patagonia," the lively "Scherzo Aymara," the magical "Amazonas" forest, and the dynamic "Malambo" dance, this work offers a vibrant and evocative musical journey through the continent.
Commissioned by Radio France, it has been performed by prestigious orchestras worldwide, including the National Orchestra of France, Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
